   Montserrat - Country and People

Montserrat, the "Emerald Island", is a volcanic island and located between Antigua and Barbuda, Saint Kitts and Guadeloupe.
After Hurricane "Hugo", which destroyed more than 90 per cent of all buildings in 1989 the disastrous volcano eruption in 1996 brought the island to the edge of existence. 7,000 of the former 11,000 inhabitants left Montserrat since. We did not hear many good news but we also knew that newspapers, radio and TV usually live from bad news. We decided to look behind the headlines and were surprised to find such a lush green island with such a stoic and heroic people.  Live is probably hard for them and many people lost everything, ... but never their smile. We adore them.
Since the eruption and due to the still active volcano more than half of the island is "forbidden zone". The north of the island is relatively secure and more and more people come back from abroad. We understand that well !!!

You can enter Montserrat by plane or ferry boat from Antigua.
